First Day Hike on Antelope Island State Park

What: Join park staff as we celebrate the new year by heading outside during this annual (and National) event. We are offering two options this year, both with start at 10:00 am. Dogs are welcome on a leash. Regular entrance fees apply. 

  • Shorter Hike: Begin at the Buffalo Point trailhead. It will be approximately one mile total, on this up and back trail. On this hike you will top out on Buffalo Point with sweeping views of Great Salt Lake.
  • Longer Hike: Six mile loop starting at the Lakeside trailhead in White Rock Bay. The hike is around the bottom of Buffalo Point. This hike is considered a moderate difficulty due to the length.

Utah Winter Faire

Identification of Historic Bottles on Antelope Island

When: December 1, 2:00 PM
Where: Fielding Garr Ranch, Antelope Island State Park, 4528 West 1700 South, Syracuse, UT 84075

What: In honor of National Mason Jar Day, archaeologist Chris Merritt from the Utah Division of State History will present on identifying historic bottles. Dr. Merritt has become an expert on identifying bottles in Utah and will share some of his findings and knowledge at Fielding Garr Ranch. For more information, contact caldrich@utah.gov

Santa Cares Event

What: Layton Hills Mall is teaming up with Cherry Hill Programs and Autism Speaks to host Santa Cares, a sensory-friendly event for children and family members with all spectrums of special needs to enjoy the time-honored tradition of the Santa Photo Experience in a calming environment prior to public hours. We want this to be an opportunity for families to visit and capture keepsake photo memories with Santa, so sensory triggers such as music, bright lights, and mall traffic will be muted. National Letter Writing Day on Antelope Island State Park

When: December 8th
Where: Fielding Garr Ranch, Antelope Island State Park

What: Before social media, memes, cell phones, daytime talk shows, party lines, telegraphs, and typewriters, people wrote letters. See if you can read 1850s handwriting, read the latest (1855) news from Antelope Island, check out the mail of a star from the heyday of the ranch, and write a letter of your own. Antelope Island Creature Quest

When: December 15th at 1:00pm – 2:30pm
Where: Visitor’s Center, Antelope Island State Park,

What: Join a family friendly “scavenger hunt”. The kids will be walking around to learn about animals that live on Antelope Island while filling out an activity booklet. This program is for the kiddos, geared for kids in grades 3rd through 5th and their families. Meet in the visitor center theater room at 1:00 pm but dress to go outside. Since portions of the activity will be outdoors, hot chocolate will be provided at the end of the program to warm everyone back up (while supplies last). The program will last approximately 1.5 hours. Those, under 12 years old, who attend the entire program will receive a Jr Ranger badge. Astronomy Program on Antelope Island State Park

When: December 15th at 6:30pm
Where: Visitor’s Center, Antelope Island State Park, 4528 West 1700 South, Syracuse, Utah 84075

What: Join park staff and Dark Sky Layton at 6:30 pm as this little visitor passes close to Earth. We will be presenting a 30 minute class on the winter constellations surrounding orion, and comet 46P. After the presentation, we will go outside and take a tour of the night sky. We will also have a couple of telescopes for you to view the comet. The entrance gate closes at 7:00 pm, so be here before then. You can exit any time. Entrance fees apply.
